Ferrite magnets can sometimes be an alternative to neodymium magnets as they have some advantages. Firstly, ferrite magnets are much cheaper than neodymium magnets. This is because they are made from a cheaper material (strontium ferrite, SrFe) than the very popular neodymium magnets. Ferrite magnets are also quite durable. For example, they don't rust in wet environments and therefore don't need any kind of protective treatment. This also explains the grey/black colour that is the colour of strontium ferrite.

If we list the strengths and weaknesses of ferrite magnets, we get this list:

Pros:

  • The price for ferrite magnets is very low.
  • They do not need any protective treatment against moisture and cold.
  • They can withstand temperatures up to 250°C

Cons:

  • Their strength is far less than neodymium magnets.
  • Even large ferrite magnets often only have a strength of a few kilos.
  • Not everyone likes the slightly dull grey/black surface.

Examples of areas where ferrite magnets are often used include panel magnets, speakers, DYI/hobby, motors, model making, alarm systems

Like neodymium magnets, ferrite magnets are also hard but brittle. Therefore, avoid subjecting the magnets to impact or other heavy loads as they will break.
