Turn a picture frame into a magnetic notice board

If you need a magnetic notice board and have a spare picture frame, you may want to read this DIY guide. Once you've read the guide, you should know all about how to turn a picture frame into a magnetic notice board that you can use in the kitchen, hallway or wherever you want it.

To make the project, you will need the following

  • A picture frame
  • Sandpaper
  • Two different paint colours
  • A galvanised metal plate that fits in the picture frame
  • Two small paint brushes
  • Masking tape / painter's tape

Be aware of

  • This guide assumes that the picture frame is made of wood. It can also be made of other materials such as metal or plastic, but then you should buy paint and sandpaper that work with these materials.
  • Remember to check if the iron plate can attract magnets. If the plate is made of zinc or copper, for example, it won't work with magnets.

How to do it

1. Clean the frame

Lightly sand the frame with sandpaper to ensure the paint can adhere. If necessary, use a dry cloth to remove any dust on the frame so it's ready to be painted.

2. Apply the first coat of paint to the frame

Apply the first coat of paint to the frame. Wait for the paint to dry and paint the frame again so that the paint covers 100%.

3. Apply masking tape

Attach the masking tape to the picture frame in the pattern of your choice. Only your imagination sets the limits. Make sure the tape is 100% tight along the edges, otherwise the paint will run under the tape when you soon paint on top of it.

4. Apply second coat of paint to the frame

Apply the second coat of paint to the frame. Wait for the paint to dry and paint the frame again so that the paint covers 100%.

5. Remove the tape

When the paint is dry, remove the masking tape very carefully. If the masking tape has been completely sealed, you should have sharp edges between the two colours of paint. As you can see in this picture, our edges could have been better.

6. Insert the metal plate

Now it's ready and all you need to do is insert the metal plate into the picture frame. How the metal plate is mounted depends on your picture frame, but it should be no different than inserting the metal plate in the same way as you would insert a painting, poster or similar.

The project is completed

You should now have a magnetic notice board ready to hang on the wall.
