Grey magnets

Most grey magnets aren't grey by design — they are grey because of their coating. Nickel plating (technically a nickel-copper-nickel sandwich) is the standard finish for neodymium magnets. It gives them their characteristic silver-grey appearance, protects the magnet from corrosion, and is the most widely stocked finish across disc, block, rod, ring, sphere and cone shapes.

If you are looking for a strong neodymium magnet without a particular colour requirement, you are almost certainly looking at a grey one. This is the workhorse of the magnet world — reliable, well-tested, and available in the widest range of sizes and grades of any finish.

Grey also works well in industrial and workshop settings where appearance is secondary to function. On steel tool boards, in machinery, on shelving and in production fixtures, a nickel-coated grey magnet blends into the metallic surroundings without drawing attention.
