Self-adhesive magnets and magnetic tape

Often you want to apply a magnet to a surface that is not magnetic. For example, on wood or plastic. In such cases, self-adhesive magnets can be a practical and effective solution. At Brisingi, we have several different types of self-adhesive magnets. Below is an overview of each type to help you choose the right self-adhesive magnet for your project.

Self-adhesive magnets

Adhesive neodymium magnets are regular neodymium magnets with self-adhesive tape attached. The magnets are usually supplied in packs containing several magnets. The magnets are supplied in pairs so that two magnets are attracted to each other. This makes them easy to use as locking mechanisms, for example.

Use cases

  • As a locking mechanism on envelopes.
  • For attaching name tags to a shirt.
  • For attaching paper/labels to whiteboards.

Self-adhesive magnetic tape

Self-adhesive magnetic tape is a flexible tape that can be cut to the length you want. The magnetic tape is self-adhesive on one side and can therefore be easily applied wherever you need it. Keep in mind that the magnetic strength of magnetic tape is much lower than neodymium magnets, but it can still be a good solution for holding lightweight objects such as paper.

Use cases

  • Hanging paper or signs
  • Attaching shelf labels to storage racks
  • As a locking mechanism. For example, to keep a mosquito net closed on a window

Guide to using self-adhesive magnets and magnetic tape

Installation

  • Make sure the surface where the magnet or magnetic tape is to be placed is clean and dry of dust. If necessary, wipe with alcohol and a cloth. If the surface is rough, it can be cleaned with a brush.
  • Remove the protective paper backing to expose the adhesive. Press the magnet firmly against the surface and it should stick.
  • Check that there is full contact between the surface and the magnet. A very uneven surface makes it difficult for the adhesive to stick.
  • Press the magnet or magnetic tape firmly onto the surface. Hold the pressure for as long as possible. For optimal adhesion, the pressure should be held for 72 hours. It's often not possible to do that long, but the longer the better. For example, 30 seconds is better than 5 seconds!

Be aware of

  • The adhesive is often very strong and therefore adheres well to many surfaces. You may therefore run the risk of wallpaper or paint peeling off if you want to remove the magnet again. Therefore, consider where you place the self-adhesive magnet.
  • Never attach a neodymium magnet to magnetic tape. This applies regardless of whether the magnetic tape is self-adhesive or not. The neodymium magnet will immediately demagnetise the magnetic tape.
  • Avoid high heat and moisture. Both reduce the adhesive's adhesive strength.
