What is a pot magnet?

In its simplest form, a pot magnet is a magnet embedded in a steel pot. The steel pot amplifies the magnet's attraction as long as there is full contact between the pot magnet and the metal surface where it is attached. The amplification of the magnetic field occurs because the steel pot directs the magnetic field in the same direction, where the magnetic field is concentrated in a small area at the contact between the pot magnet and the metal surface.

What should I know about pot magnets before I buy?

  • Pot magnets is a common term for magnets that are embedded in a steel pot. There are many types of pot magnets such as hook magnets, countersunk pot magnets, hook eye magnets, threaded stud magnets and more.
  • Pot magnets require full contact between the pot magnet and the metal surface. A distance of just 1 millimeter weakens the magnet significantly.
  • Pot magnets are more durable than regular magnets as they are protected from impact by a steel casing.

Other things to consider?

Pot magnets are great because of their durability and great strength. However, you should always consider the usage situation, as there may be alternatives to pot magnets. Some examples could be:

  • Do you need a magnet that needs to be screwed on, but where high strength and durability are less important? Then you might consider countersunk neodymium magnets without a steel pot.
  • Need a small magnet to glue to a surface? Adhesive magnets can be an option.
  • Is there a few millimeters of space between metal plate and magnet? If so, pot magnets won't work and you should look at alternatives among our regular magnets.
